1) She’s a Southern girl turned LA model
Heard left Austin, Texas aged 17, dropping out of high school to pursue modelling in New York, then LA. (She continued her studies at home, earning a diploma.) She made early appearances in music videos before landing acting roles in episodes of Jack & Bobby (2004), The Mountain (2004) and a cameo as a salesgirl in The O.C. (2005).
2) She’s starred in teen movies and zombie horrors
Her major acting breakthrough came when she was cast as the title character, a shy outsider turned teen mass-murderer, in All the Boys Love Mandy Lane (2006). The horror theme continued in The Stepfather (2009), when Heard survived a gory encounter with a serial killer, and in Zombieland (2009), where she played Jesse Eisenberg’s undead love interest. In 2011 Heard starred alongside Nicolas Cage in supernatural romp Drive Angry, as a waitress who goes on the run with a vengeful zombie. CREDIT: STRINGER
3) She’s a gay rights activist who has dated men and women
In December 2010 Heard came out at the 25th anniversary celebration for GLAAD (the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation). Between 2008 and 2011 she was in a relationship with photographer Tasya van Ree.However, at the time she stated, “I don’t want to be labeled as one thing or another… When it comes to love I am totally open. I don’t want to be put into a category, as in ‘I’m this’ or ‘I’m that.’†She has campaigned vocally for gay marriage, as well as causes including Amnesty International and the Girl Up United Nations Foundation.
4) Jeremy Clarkson ogled her on Top Gear
In February 2011, she appeared on Top Gear, where she talked about her love of guns (she owns a .357 Magnum) and muscle cars (she drives a Mustang), and revealed that she used to do line-dancing in Texas bars. Presenter Jeremy Clarkson told her he was picturing her naked as they talked; she didn’t bat an eyelid, but set a respectable lap time of 1:50.3 as the Star in a Reasonably Priced Car.
5) Johnny Depp has already married her once before
Heard and Depp met on the set of The Rum Diary, the 2011 film based on Hunter S. Thompson’s novel, in which their characters marry following a whirlwind romance. At the time of filming, Heard was with van Ree and Depp was with Vanessa Paradis, his then-partner of 14 years with whom he has two children, Lily-Rose (15) and Jack (12). As well as nabbing a husband, Heard won a Hollywood Film Festival Spotlight Award for her performance in the film.
6) She’s a follower of objectivism
When her best friend died in a car crash aged 16, Catholic-raised Heard declared herself an atheist after reading the works of Russian-American novelist and philosopher Ayn Rand. Her love of books has lasted: her 28th birthday present from Depp included a trip to Bauman Rare Books in NYC, where he splashed out £125,000 on a rare copy of Hemingway’s first story collection, In Our Time, alongside several 18th-century poetry books and a leather-bound diary.
7) She is more interested in women’s empowerment than in celebrity
“It’s not part of my professional life. I want to be an artist,†she told Flare magazine in 2013. Despite regularly appearing on “Sexiest†and “Most Beautiful†lists, Heard isn’t interested in exploiting her sexuality instead of her acting talents, and has spoken of the need for more female film-makers and producers. She’s said, “I would love to see women be able to be powerful, complex, smart, opinionated and taken seriously, even if they are beautiful. Even more, I would love to see women held to different standards, other than the superficial ones that we’re held to.â€
