Producers of reality series Big Brother Africa, have dismissed media reports that contestants from Ghana were rejected because of an Ebola outbreak in their country.

The upcoming season of Big Brother Africa, now in its ninth season, is set to start in early September and will be filmed in Johannesburg.

According to Michelle Esau, Big Brother publicist for South Africa, the contestants applied for visas to travel to South Africa for the final stage of auditions but their applications were not processed and issued in time.

“The contestants from Ghana could not make it because of delays in their visa applications. Therefore we had to get Ghanaians within South Africa to audition.”

The controversial South African visa rules laid out by the South African Department of Home Affairs has been criticised by other countries who say the move will affect tourism in South Africa. Immigration consultants have also reportedly lodged court cases challenging the regulation.

The visa rules only give persons coming into South Africa 30 days to stay.
