He was killed on the scene after being fatally shot by police. Prior to his deadly attack, Gavin reportedly used the pseudonym Cosmo Setepenra online, under which he posted at least one YouTube video about police protests and oppression.1a4-4

Personal Life:
It’s unclear whether Gavin was a Baton Rouge resident, but he was a former marine who was honorably discharged in 2010 after achieving the rank of E-5 (sergeant). Before his death, he was a lifestyle guru under the persona Cosmo Setepenra on

Gavin Eugene Long, the gunman who killed three police officers and wounded three others in Baton Rouge, La., on Sunday, left a vast and angry online trail documenting his interest in black separatism and fury at police shootings of black men.

Long, whose identity was confirmed by a law enforcement official, was shot to death by police after opening fire on officers on Airline Highway, less than a mile from the city’s police headquarters in Baton Rouge.

One law enforcement official described him as “a black separatist.” He carried out the shooting on his 29th birthday, and was from Kansas City, Mo.

It’s unclear when he came to Baton Rouge.

On July 17, 2016 Long opened fire on police in  2016 shooting of Baton Rouge police officers killing at three officers and wounding three others. One of his victims was a black police officer, Officer Montrell Jackson. During the shooting he also killed officers Brad Garafola and Matthew Gerald.

Long undertook the murder spree on his 29th birthday. A reporter who tried going to Long’s residence was met with a man armed with an AK-47.
