igbo-tribe-2
According to Wikipedia “An ethnic group or ethnicity is a category of people who identify with each other based on common language, ancestral, social, cultural, or national experiences. Unlike most other social groups, ethnicity is primarily an inherited status. Membership of an ethnic group tends to be defined by a shared cultural heritage, ancestry, origin myth, history, homeland, language and/or dialect, symbolic systems such as religion, mythology and ritual, cuisine, dressing style, art, and physical appearance.

Nigeria as the Africa’s most populous country, is composed of more than 250 ethnic groups; the major, most populous and politically influential are: Hausa and the Fulani 29%, Yoruba 21%, Igbo (Ibo) 18%, Ijaw 10%, Kanuri 4%, Ibibio 3.5%, Tiv 2.5%.

  • Indeed there is Yala in Benue State, who are the Idoma’s, as in Nasarawa State the Doma People, but in Cross River State we are called Yala, not Iyala. As we have Yala’nkum in Ikom LGA, Yala’Obubra in Obubra LGA and Yala in Yala LGA with a large population speaking the Yala dialect, all in Cross River State, . please take note.

      • Ika is not a sub tribe or identity. There are 9 clans of Owa, Agbor in Delta State and Igbanke and it’s surronding communities in Edo State all belong to the Ika tribe. Good work but not comprehensive.

      • Let’s not mix it up… There is a big difference between tribe and dialet(spoken language)… In a tribe, there may be more than one dialet spoken… For instance, Igbo tribe speak many dialet, nsukka, ngwa, Owerri, ikwerre, waawah, ihube, agbor, etc…You can relate it with your tribe,…. Remember, there is a common understanding among many dialets in a tribe, like names, greetings, names of deities, and so on and so forth… So let’s get it right… Political divisions have made many tribes loose their oneness and tradition…. Good job by the researcher, you may need to research further for improved edition. My humble submission.

  • Please OP my tribe is Yukuben from Taraba state Takum Ocal Government Area and we are not in this list!, and I am sure there are many other tribes that not included in your list!, please make a proper research and update the list!, thank you!

  • Bassa in plateau state is a local government not a tribe, am a mixture of buji and Rukuba and both tribes are in Bassa local government. Cham is in gombe state not bauchi

  • The Tangale tribe is now in Gombe State and NOT Bauchi state. Secondly chibok tribe is in Borno state and NOT in Yobe state.

  • I didn’t see “Ikwere”,a tribe in Rivers State. The present governor (Wike) and the immediate past governor (Amaechi) are both from there.

  • You people are just listing names that are not part of the Nigerian tribes, what about waawah tribe in Enugu states of Nigeria?

  • There is no Babur in Taraba state. Chibbok is in Borno not yobe. Bura is a dialect out of Babur-Bura (Borno, Adamawa and yobe)

  • There is no tribe as GWARI in Nigeria. We only have Gbagyi otherwise called Gbari. And I can’t remember seeing any Gbagyi claiming Plateau State since the creation of Nasarawa State. The political and traditional leadership of Gbagyi people in FCT is enough justification to their claim of Abuja. Outside Kaduna, Niger, FCT and Nasarawa States, the Gbagyi people are found in Kogi State. Atumaka of Chikara is the Traditional ruler of Gbagyi people in Kogi State.
