Mario Balotelli has completed his transfer to Ligue 1 side Nice after weeks spent trying to offload Anfield’s most unpopular squad member finally came to fruition on Wednesday evening.
Following a torrid two-year spell at Liverpool, the out-of-favour Italian striker joins the French side having scored just once in the Premier League since signing for £16m under then manager Brendan Rodgers. How the mighty have fallen. Costing the club more than £10,500 a minute and over £4m a goal, both Jurgen Klopp and the Anfield faithful were more than happy to see the back of Balotelli, most of all former Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher, who tweeted that “Balotelli on a free is still paying over the odds”.
While Liverpool appeared ready to pay off the remainder of his contract earlier in the day – should a deal fail to materialise – the last-minute offer from Nice brought an end to weeks of speculation.
