Rivers State Government will immortalise Mr Samuel Okonta, Â the Corps Member who lost his life during the Â rerun Â legislative Â elections Â in Â the State, Â Governor Nyesom Ezenwo Wike Â has Â announced. He Â also declared Â that Â the Â State Government Â will provide Â all necessary Â assistance Â for the police to investigate Â the killing of the corps member, with a view to Â identifying those responsible Â and prosecuting Â them.
Speaking Â at Â the Â Rivers State National Youth Service Corps, NYSC, Â Headquarters Â in Â Port Harcourt Â on Â Wednesday, Â Governor Â Wike Â also announced Â an increment Â in the Â montly allowance Â of Â corps members Â serving Â outside Â Port Harcourt Â from N10, 000 to N15000. He also increased the state monthly allowance of Â corps members Â serving Â in Â Port Harcourt Â from N5000 Â to N10000.
He expressed sadness Â that the corps member Â died serving the nation. He said that the Rivers Â State Government will take care of the family of the late corps member.
Governor Wike Â noted that Â the death is even more painful Â because Â the corps member was an orphan who suffered through schooling Â and was on the verge of being of help to his immediate Â family.
He said: â€œThe death of this corps member Â is unfortunate Â and condemnable. Â I urge the Police to thoroughly Â investigate the crime. The outcome Â of Â the Â investigation Â should Â be made public so that those involved Â are prosecuted. The killing Â of Â this corps member Â must not be Â swept under the carpet.
â€œI call for post mortem on the corpse of the corps member Â so that we can Â ascertain Â the Â type of bullet and type of Â gun that killed him. The post mortem will also determine who bears that type of gun that Â killed Â the corps Â member â€œ.
The governor Â said Â his administration Â will also take measures Â to improve Â security Â in the state. He said Â that Â steps will be taken to ensure Â that Â the incident Â does not reoccur.
He also commiserated with the Department Â of Â State Services , over the death of their
State Coordinator of the NYSC, Mrs Ngozi Nwatarali commended the Â governor Â for commiserating with the NYSC Â at its moment Â of grief. She appealed Â for greater protection Â for corps members Â during Â elections.
Responding Â on behalf Â of Â the Â family, Â Alex Edeabeatu Â thanked the Governor Â for his gesture. Â He said Â that Â the Â late corps member was a shining Â light.
