British couple spends around £10-£20k on tying the knot, not exactly the kind of money most of us have just lying around, but if glossy magazines have taught us anything it’s that when the mega-rich say ‘I do’ £20k wouldn’t even cover the cost of the flowers. 2014 was the year the world’s favourite super-rich-mega-hunk-bachelor extraordinaire, Mr George Clooney, finally got hitched to the world’s most perfect woman and it wasn’t exactly your average local church, marzipan cake do – but how does it stack up to some of the other most lavish weddings of all time?
1. Charles and Diana
There can be no talk of elaborate weddings without first discussing the royals. While it didn’t cost as much as Will and Kate’s big day (we’ll get to them) it was one of the most staggeringly expensive ceremonies of its day, costing an estimated £30 million back in 1981. Diana wore one of the most iconic dresses in the world, a gigantic £9000 masterpiece by David Emanuel, and the whole thing was watched by 750 million people on their TV screens. Unfortunately the marriage ended in divorce 15 years later.
2. William and Kate
One of the most iconic couples of our time who’s wedding day didn’t disappoint. Kate and William’s wedding was the envy of every little girl who dreamed of growing up to meet her prince charming, from the horse drawn carriages right down to the Sarah Burton/Alexander McQueen wedding dress (a £40,000 wedding dress no less). The whole lavish parade is estimated to have cost over £50 million.
3. Vanisha Mittal and Amit Ahatia
Lakshmi Mittal, chairman and CEO of the world’s largest steel making company, made sure his daughter Vanisha got married in style. No expense was spared when it came to entertaining 1000 high profile guests from across the globe at the Palace of Versailles, the Jardin des Tuileries, and the Chateau Vaux le Vicomte. If that wasn’t enough, and let’s face it, when you’re dads one of the richest men in the world of course it’s not, there were fireworks at the Eiffel Tower and a performance by Kylie Minogue – the whole thing cost upwards of £30 million.
4. George Clooney and Amal Alamuddin
How could we forget the wedding of the year? Getting hitched to George Clooney alone would be a dream come true for anyone – but Amal Alamuddin, internationally acclaimed human rights lawyer, author, and activist, is not just anyone. The wedding took place in the form of four day extravaganza in the heart of Venice, with 100 of Hollywood’s biggest players in attendance (no Brad and Ange though) – there were pool side cocktail parties, 5 star hotels, and one of the most breath-taking backdrops in the world – all for an estimated £8 million.
5. Mark Zuckerberg and Pricilla Chan
And now for something completely different. Just to prove you don’t need a lavish super-wedding to prove your love, even if you can afford one. Facebook founder, billionaire, and Harvard University dropout Mark Zuckerberg was worth around $19 billion when he married his wife Pricilla in 2012. While he could probably have afforded to get married on the moon wearing suit hand woven from diamonds and kitten fur, the couple opted for an intimate ceremony in the back garden of their Palo Alto home. There were only 100 guests, the food cost around $7.50 per person, and everyone had a wonderful time.
